Saxifraga (Winter Hardy Succulent Saxifrage)

The genus Saxifrage is a very diverse genus with a wide range of semiperennial to perennial plants, covering some 480 species in total. Saxifrages can be found from the greater part of the temperate and sub-arctic zones of the northern hemispheres with some "exotic" outposts in Ethiopia, Mexico and the Arctic region. Several subalpine species from dryish spots in mountainous regions have succulent, usually nicely glaucous leaves in dense rosettes and make very dense, floriferous clusters with time. This group of Saxifrage is best grown in small crevices filled with a humus-rich, sandy soil in full sun in the rock garden.
Sow the tiny, dust-like seeds very flat on a humus-rich, very sandy or stony soil from early spring to mid summer. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep pots in full sun. Always water from beneath and keep pots sheltered from heavy rains so that seeds will not be dispersed. Transplant young plants in early spring as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
