Olea (Olive Tree)

Olive Trees originate in the Eastern Mediterranean region, extending to South Africa and Western Asia. Olea europea has been cultivated for several thousand of years in the Mediterranean and its many cultivars are highly valued for their healthy oil and fruits. All species and cultivars are easily grown as pot or container plants with ornamental leather-like, lanceolate leaves, greenish-grey on the surface and whitish-green below. These evergreen species thrive in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot with regular watering in summer. During winter months they require a cool, yet frostfree, preferably sunny place with less watering. In warmer regions (Atlantic region and the Mediterranean) plants can be grown in the garden in any rich, rocky soil in a sunny spot.
Sow seeds some 1cm deep in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Keep soil always slightly moist, yet not wet and pots rather warm at some 20°C to 30°C. Germination is irregular over several months and is completed after one year. As soon as seedlings appear place pots in a sunny spot.
All are USDA Climate Zone 9.
