Pistacia (Pistache & Mastic Shrub)

Pistachio or Pistache and Mastic Shrubs originate from the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean to Central Asia and are evergreen or deciduous, moderately sized shrubs to small trees with terminal clusters of small flowers followed by red-shelled fruits containing a single seed each. The pistachio nut from Pistacia vera can be eaten either fresh and raw or roasted and salted. Pistacia vera is a dioecious species, i.e. female and male flowers are born on different plants. Thus several plants have to be grown close together in order to guarantee pollination. All Pistacia species can be easily grown in containers in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter reduce watering to a minimum and keep plants frostfree at a minimum of some 5°C. Alternatively in warmer regions (such as the Mediterranean or the Rhine valley) Pistacia sinensis and Pistacia vera can be grown in the open garden in any rich, rocky soil in a protected spot.
Sow in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot at some 20°C to 30°C throughout the year. Keep soil always slightly moist. In winter reduce watering and keep seedlings frostfree in full sun.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8 or 10.
20 seeds per package, respectively 3 large seeds (Pistacia vera).
