Habranthus (Rain Lily) & Zephyranthes (Zephyr Lily)

Rain Lilies and Zephyr Lilies are closely related genera of mostly summer dormant bulbous plants from southern North America to South America. They have narrow, linear, more rarely strap-shaped leaves and showy yellow, orange, white or rose flower trumpets which are usually formed after the first rains in autumn. Species from Central and South America suit for any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter carefully water plants and keep at a minimum of some 10°C. Habranthus tubispathus (Rio Grande Copperlily) is one out of few reasonably winter hardy species and can be grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny and sheltered spot. All Habranthus and Zephyranthes species easily grown from seeds and most species will reach flowering size within one, respectively two years already!
Sow seeds flat on any well drained substrate and cover them slightly with sand or soil. Keep pots in full sun at some 20°C and soil always slightly moist from beneath. A temperature drop at night down to some 10°C to 15°C may significantly enhance germination in several species.
