Puya (Giant Bromelia)

Puya are subalpine members of the Bromeliacea from the Andean range in South America. Very easy and robust plants for a partially shaded spot in any rich, and well drained soil, good pot plants in any well drained, rocky to sandy soil with some humus. They make dense rosettes of grass-like to broadly-linear leaves, always with brown to black thorned margins. Large erect racemes arise from the basal rosette with numerous funnel-shaped to bell-like flowers. As Agave all flowering Puya will die down after flowering, usually leaving some offsets, which themselves gain flowering size in few years.
Sow the small and flat paper-like seeds at 15°C to 25°C on any rich, yet very well drainind soil in partial shaded. Do not cover seeds with soil, keep soil only slightly moist and always water from beneath. Once germinted, move sowing pots to a sunny position. Fast and reliable germination within four weeks. Keep seedlings cool at a minimum of some 10°C in winter and in rather dry and sunny position. Seeds look small and paper-like, but all of our stock has a tested germination rate of above 95% !
All are USDA Climate Zone 9 unless otherwise specified.
20 dust like seeds per package, unless not stated differently.

At present we have almost 600 different bromeliad species in cultivation and we are looking forward to offer seeds from many more species in the closer future. The full list of our cultivated plants is available on this page: Bromeliads (Bromeliaceae).

Puya raimondii (Queen of the Andes)

Puya raimondii (Queen of the Andes)

300 (450)cm ø, Queen of the Andes is native of Peru and adjacent areas and makes the tallest inflorescence of all plants, eventually reaching up to 8m in height. However, cultivated plants will reach flowering size much earlier after some 20 to 35 years "only" under appropiate growing conditions. The entire plant will gradually die down after setting seed, and propagation is by seeds only. Keep slow growing plants slightly drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C and in full sun throughout the year. Seeds are rarely available and only few packages are in stock. Tested viability of our seed stock is above 80% under optimal sowing conditions.
