Helonias (Swamp Pink)

Swamp Pink is the only species in the monotypic genus Helonias and native of moist soils in woods, thickets, and meadows, as well as marshy areas in eastern North America. It is a semi-herbaceous perennial with a basal rosette of yellowish-green leaves and a central, upright stalk with numerous bright pink flowers in spring. Grows in any humus-rich or leafy, always slightly moist, well drained soil in partial shade.
Sow the fine seeds flat on any humus-rich, well drained, slightly moist soil from autumn to early spring. Do not cover seeds. Keep pots outside in a protected spot and shelter from heavy rains, so that seeds are not scattered around. Transplant seedlings as soon as they are strong enough in autumn or late spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
