Hylomecon, Stylomecon (Wind Poppy) & Stylophorum

Bearpoppies (Arctomecon spp.), Wood Poppies (Hylomecon spp.), Wind Poppies (Stylomecon spp.) and Celandine Poppies (Stylophorum spp.) are small genera with only few species each in China (Stylophorum lasiocarpum and Stylophorum sutchuenense), Japan (Hylomecon japonica) and North America (Stylophorum diphyllum from deciduous forests in Ontario and south to Kentucky, Stylomecon heterophylla in California, and Arctomecon californica, Arctomecon merriamii, and Arctomecon humilis from the western part of the Mojave Desert, USA). Most species grow in humus rich, slightly moist soils in open spots in woods, Arctomecon species occur in dry rocky soils in desert areas. Hylomecon and Stylophorum are herbaceous perennials with light green, lobed to divided leaves and showy bright sun yellow flowers in spring. Arctomecon are showy and rarely seen perennials with densely hairy leaf, bluish-green leaf rosettes with white or bright yellow flowers. Stylomecon heterophylla is a rare annual, fast growing species with orange-red flowers and which readily selfsows under appropiate conditions. All are easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained, always slightly moist soil in a preferably partially shaded spot. The desert species Arctomecon require a very well draining soil on a rather unorganic basis and are best grown under glass as protection from winter wetness.
Sow seeds flat on any humus rich, very well drained, slightly moist soil. Keep pots in a partially shaded, protected spot outside.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
