Xerophyllum (Bear Grass)

Bear Grass is a monotypic genus with only this species, Xerophyllum tenax. It is native to humus-rich soils in the upper meadows, woods, and subalpine slopes in N America (British Columbia, SW Alberta, Sierra Nevada and C California to Rocky Mountains). It is a clump forming species with coarse, evergreen, grassy foliage, and most ornamental, rather tall racemes of terminal heads of scented, creamy-white flowers. Xerophyllum tenax can only be propagated by seeds, cuttings taken from offsets will usually not thrive.
Sow seeds flat in any humus-rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Carefully transplant seedlings into the open garden in autumn. Ideal in a rich soil in the rock garden.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
