Argemone (Prickly Poppy) & Arctomecon (Bearpoppy)

Prickly Poppies (Argemone spp.) are mostly annuals from dryish, rocky sunny sites in from south western USA to Mexico and South America. They are fast growing and display bright colored flowers from late spring to mid summer above mostly glaucous, dissected leaves. They are easily grown in any rich, very well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. Excellent in the rock garden. Annual species will readily self sow under appropriate conditions.
Bearpoppies are a small genus with three species only (Arctomecon californica, Arctomecon merriamii, and Arctomecon humilis) from the western part of the Mojave Desert, USA. Arctomecon species occur in dry rocky soils in desert areas. They are showy and rarely seen perennials with densely hairy leaf, bluish-green leaf rosettes with white or bright yellow flowers. These desert species require a very well draining soil on a rather unorganic basis and are best grown under glass with protection from winter wetness.
Sow Argemone seeds flat to the final spot in the garden after the last freezing nights in spring at some 15°C to 20°C daytime. Most Argemone will require a cool, yet frostfree period in order to germinate. If seeds are sown too late and/or at constantly high temperatures above 20°C germination will be delayed until following spring. Arctomecon seeds are best sown under controlled conditions in pots at some 10°C to 20°C. A temperature drop at night will significantly enhance germination in all species. If seeds are sown at higher temperatures, they may not germinate.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8.
