Acaena (Cockle Button)

Cockle Button is a genus mostly from the southern hemisphere in South America, New Zealand, and Australia. Most species are fully winter hardy in Central Europe without any additional winter protection. They make cushions with ornamental, feathered leaves and upright stalks with inconspicuous white to yellowish-green flowers followed by nice, densely packed fruit heads in summer. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Ideal in the rock garden.
Sow from autumn to late spring in any well drained soil in a sunny spot. Transplant seedlings as soon as they are strong enough from summer to early autumn.
All plants are from USDA Climate Zone 7.
