Nigella (Love-in-a-mist & Black Cumin)

Love-in-a-mist or Black Cumin are annual to biannual species from South-East Asia to Asia Minor and the Mediterranean and have white, yellow, pink, pale blue or pale purple, star-like flowers followed by decorative, inflated seed capsules above deeply cut foliage. All species are easily grown as annuals in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. They will readily selfsow under appropriate conditions. Seeds from some species are used as a spice in various Asian dishes.
Sow seeds directly to the ground in late spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.

Flowers are followed by inflated capsules which may serve for dry flower arrangements. Unlike those from the closely related Nigella sativa, seeds from Nigella damascena shall not be eaten for containing a high amount of alkaloids! Nigella sativa (Black Cumin)

40 (50)cm, Black Cumin is an ornamental annual species from south and southwest Asia. It has pale blue to white flowers above filigree leaves. Flowers are followed by inflated capsules which contains black, aromatic bitter seeds. These are usually used roasted as a spice in various dishes in India and as a topping on a special kind of bread in Turkey and its' neighboring states. Sow after the last freezing nights in mid spring directly to the ground in the garden. VI-VIII.
