Bowiea (Climbing Onion) & Drimia (Sea Onion)

Climbing Onion is a monotypic genus from South and East Africa with a single species only, Bowiea volubilis. It produces from a spherical green bulb annual twining shoots with thread-like leaves and small greenish-yellow flowers. Sea Onions (syn. Urginea) are winter green and summer dormant bulbous plants from sandy to rocky soils throughout the Mediterranean region and the Canary islands. They make very large bulbs, long and broad leaves and tall spikes with white flowers towards the end of summer just before new leaves emerge.
All can be easily grown in any rich, well drained rather inorganic substrate with few humus added. In winter and during growth keep Drimia species in full sun and carefully water. Bowiea volubilis goes dormant in winter, when bulbs should be kept completely dry at aminimum of some 15°C.
Sow flat at a minimum of some 15°C from autumn to spring in any well drained, rather sandy soil in a sunny spot.

Drimia maritima ssp. maritima (Sea Onion)

120 (180)cm, Sea Onion (syn. Urginea maritima ssp. maritima) is native throughout the Mediterranean region where it occurs in cliffs, dry hills and sandy spots. It make tall flower stalks with hundreds of small white flowers and blackish green anthers, bulbs become quite massive with time. Easily grown in any rich, very well drained substrate with few humus added. In summer during dormancy keep completely dry, start to water with emerging leaves towards the end of summer. During winter keep plants in full sun and carefully water. VIII-IX.
