Sonchus (Giant Sowthistle)

Giant Sowthistle are woody shrubs from the Macaronesian region. They are very distinct from their smaller, herbal relatives from central Europe. All are excellent, easily cultivated pot plants for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. Several species make woody, erect stems and enormously large, dense terminal rosettes with long leaves crowned by an impressively large inflorescence of bright yellow flowers. Especially the shrublike, tall species with stems crowned by an enourmously large leaf rosette are simply spectacular foliage plants: Sonchus acaulis, Sonchus arboreus, Sonchus canariensis, Sonchus congestus, Sonchus fruticosus, Sonchus hierrense, and Sonchus palmensis. In general most Sonchus species have a similar habit to the however not closer-related Dendroseris and Robinsonia species (Robinson Crusoe Islands' Giant Cabbage Trees) from the Juan Fernández islands in the southeastern Pacific. Keep plants slightly drier and very sunny in winter at a minimum of some 10°C.
Sow flat on any humus rich, very well drained substrate at some 20°C throughout the year in a sunny spot. Cover seeds very thinly with soil. After germination move seedlings in partial shade.
