Astartea & Chamelaucium (Wax-Flower)

Astartea and Wax-Flower from Western Australia belong to two small genera of evergreen, in general small to medium-sized woody shrubs within the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Most have fine, needle-like, leathery, sometimes slightly aromatic leaves and lateral, showy bright colored white rose to pink flowers produced in profusion. All are good pot or container plants for any fertile, humus-rich, slightly sandy to rocky, lime-free soil in a sunny spot throughout the year with a winter minimum of some 10°C and reduced watering. Sow seeds flat on top of any rich, sandy soil at some 20°C. Do not cover seeds with soil. Keep pots always moist from beneath and sunny until germination starts, then keep soil drier. All are of USDA climate zone 11. 30 seeds per package (Astartea spp.), respectively 20 seeds per package (Chamaelaucium spp.). |
