Jubaea chilensis (Chilenean Wine Palm)

Jubaea chilensis (Chilenean Wine Palm)
3 (22)m, Chilean Wine Palm is native of the Pacific coast of Central Chile, and has become very rare in its natural habitat. Makes a very broad, gray stem and broad dropping crown with long, very hard, leather like leaves. Adult specimens produce plum sized, yellow and edible fruits. Grows slowly and is very hardy, for any well drained soil on a sandy and loamy basis. Very large seeds resembling small coconuts. Seeds offered have a very high overall germination rate (> 80%), however germination is quite slow due to the nut-like shell. If seeds do not germinate in the first year of sowing, keep pots rather cool (yet frostfree) and the soil semi-moist during winter. Keep pots warmer and sunny in spring the following year, then germination occurs quite fast. USDA Climate Zone 6.
