20 (40)cm, in this subspecies the typical and most ornamental prominent violet-purple bracts are even larger, and crowning the flower spikes. Native to rocky, sun exposed spots in central Spain and mountains of north-eastern Portugal. As the species mentioned above it is sufficiently hardy in any rocky, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun or under cold glass in an unheated greenhouse or wintergarden.
