Musa sikkimensis (Darjeeling Banana)
300 (450)cm, Darjeeling Banana amongst the cold-hardiest of all bananas, which may be planted out to the garden in Central Europe. It is native of montane forests in north-eastern India and Bhutan in the Himalayas and makes a massive trunk with very long and broad leaves, both with a reddish shade. After plants have died down in winter, it will regrow vigorously from the large subterranean rhizome in late spring. For any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Give trunk and rhizomes a very thick mulch-layer with height of at least 50cm in winter. USDA Climate Zone 7. VIII-IX.
