Origanum virens (syn. Origanum vulgare ssp. virens)

30 (80)cm, a perennial with upright stems and a woody base. It has oval to elliptical, strongly aromatic leaves. This species is native of rocky soils in sunny spots throughout the Canary islands, Madeira (our seed batcjh), and the Azores, where it is used in various local dishes. It differs from ist Mediterranean cousin by ist clear white flowers in small terminal buds and larger and strongly aromatic leaves. For any well drained soil in an always sunny spot. This species is fully winter hardy in central Europe. V-VIII.
