Pinus pinea (Mediterranean Stone Pine)

10 (25)m, Mediterranean Stone Pine is native of rocky, sun-exposed sites at lower elevations in the nothern Mediterranean region. With age it makes a broad and quite flat umbrella. Adult specimens produce large cones which contain the edible and high-priced pine nuts. For any rich, very well drained soil in a protected and sunny spot throughout the year. In Central Europe it is only reliably winterhardy in the mildest regions (e.g. the Rhine-Valley and Atlantic coast). Alternatively grow in containers in any rich, well drained soil and keep plants slightly drier at a minimum of some 5°C in winter.
