2 (8)m, Madeira Dragon Tree from the island of Madeira (Portugal) where it is supposedly native, yet only two wild specimens are known from steep cliffs in a valley in the South of the island. It is still not clear if Dracaena daco is native of Madeira or if it had been introduced from the Canaries (ssp. draco) or the Cabo Verde islands (ssp. caboverdeana) a long time ago. Nowadays it is being cultivated in many public and private gardens. Plants differ from Canary populations in broader leaves with a more bluish color. Easily grown in any rich, well drained substrate in full sun throughout the year. During winter keep plants drier at a minimum of some 12°C. |
