70 (120)cm, Jiló originates in W Africa, but nowadays it widely grown in Brazil for its tomato like fruits used as a vegetable. Seeds offered derive from the „Morro Redondo“ cultivar with more round fruits, used in the cookery like an Aubergine, when turning orange red on ripening. The wrinkled fruits add a distinct bitterness to several local dishes. Though being a perennial, it is best grown as an annual. Sow in early spring at some 20°C. Transplant seedlings in late spring to early summer after the last freezing nights in any humus rich, well drained soil in full sun. V-VIII. |
