Nigella damascena (Damascene Love-in-a-mist)

30 (40)cm, Damascene Love-in-a-mist is a showy annual from the Mediterranean through Asia Minor. It makes pale blue to always white flowers above filigree leaves. Flowers are followed by inflated capsules which may serve for dry flower arrangements. Unlike those from the closely related Nigella sativa, seeds from Nigella damascena shall not be eaten for containing a high amount of alkaloids! Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Sow after the last freezing nights in mid spring directly to the ground in the garden. VI-VIII.
