40cm, Madeira Butcher's Broom makes broad, blackish green, horizontally arranged "leaves" on short, erect stalks. Miniature, whitish-purple flowers on the midrib beneath, followed by most ornamental, bright red, large, single to few-seeded berries from late summer to early winter. For any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade. May endure slight frost in autumn, keep sunnier and drier at min. 5°C in winter. A rare Madeira endemic, virtually unknown in cultivation. Seed is always very scarce and 2 packages only are available in 2015! VII-XI. |
