All Magnolias or Tulip Trees and Lotus Tree are very ornamental shrubs to trees with attractive foliage and elegant and showy flowers in snow-white, cream to rose and pink. These are followed by pineapple to cucumber-like fruit heads in brilliant red to pinky shades, and which open in late autumn to shed the seeds with contrasting colors from orange, red to rose and purple. Magnolia sieboldii and Magnolia stellata are smaller erect shrubs with a good size for any garden. All are easily grown and robust plants for any humus rich soil in full sun to partial shade. Sow autumn to early spring in any rich soil some 1cm/0.4" deep, keep soil moist but not wet and place pots in a sunny spot. Seeds require a prolonged cooling period (stratification) after sowing. If being sown too late in the year, some seeds may not germinate before the second spring. Seedlings have moderate to good growth rates. Transplant after fourth pair of real leaves appear and leave plants undisturbed. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 7 seeds per package. |
