3 (5)m, tall woody, deciduous shrub to small tree with trumpet like, bright scarlet flowers before the trilobed leaves with prominent veins appear. Native of Brazil and the Antilles. For any rich, well drained soil in full sun. Keep drier at a minimum of some 5°C in winter when plants are dormant. III-VI.
