250 (350)cm, Altenstein's Giant Canna is an ornamental and very tall species with showy large leaves and terminal racemes with orange flowers. Canna altensteinii is not an accepted name and it is supposedly a form within the extremely variable Canna indica complex. However, at least our plants labeled Canna altensteinii are clearly distinct from Canna indica and easily recognizable. And it appears that they may fit quite well the description of an accepted Canna species, namely Canna bangii. Unless we will have sorted this out, we will maintain the name Canna altensteinii for our plants. And if at any time in the future we will know with certainty what our plants are, we will inform all customers. These plants grow much taller in all aspects than Canna indica and their overall habit is more similar to Türckheim's Giant Canna (Canna tuerckheimii), whereas seeds are almost twice the size of any Canna indica form. Canna altensteinii is easily grown in humus rich soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C and reduce watering to a minimum. At lower temperatures plants will go dormant and the rootstock will stay dormant during the cold season. VII-X. |
