3 (10)m, Fragrant Moon Flower is a showy tropical perennial climber with spectacular, very large (up to 15cm in diameter!), white, long tubed and sweet scented flower trumpets which start to open in the evening. Petals are quite flat and resemble a full moon. The leaves are entire heart shaped or lobed. It is native of open spots in woods from northern Argentina to Mexico and Florida (USA). For any humus rich, well drained soil in full sun throughout the year and a winter minimum of some 20°C. Alternatively grow as an annual. Sow in early spring under glass at some 20°C. Transplant to the garden after the last freezing nights from end of spring to early summer. Several seed merchants offer Ipomoea alba under the invalid name Ipomoea noctiflora. VIII-IX. |
