30cm, Sacred Blue Water Lily (also erroneously called "Blue Lotus of the Nile") is a medium sized species with floating glossy leaves with small brownish dots and streaks on the lower side, and showy pale blue flowers. Nymphaea caerulea is native of swampy and freshwater areas in Eastern Africa. The true species is extremely rare in cultivation and much asked for. What you will mostly be offered under this name is in reality Nymphaea colorata. You will find thousands of these misidentified pseudo caerulea being offered on the web, be it as dried flowers and petals, plants or seeds. A basic Google image search will return more than 90% misidentifed plants. True Nymphaea caerulea always has pure yellow stamens, with only the tip being very light blue, petals are always light blue fading to pure white at the base, and not bluish violet degrading to yellow as they do in Nymphaea colorata. There is an excellent video on YouTube how to easily distinguish a true Nymphaea caerulea from fake ones. Just search for "Blue Water Lily Identification | Nymphaea caerulea". Our seeds are from the real species. Easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun. Nymphaea caerulea seedlings are very fast growing and under optimal conditions it will take only 3 to 4 months for the first flowers to appear. VI-XI. |
