30cm, Sacred Blue Water Lily is a medium sized species with floating glossy leaves and showy pale blue flowers. Nymphaea caerulea is native of swampy and freshwater areas in Eastern Africa. The true species is extremely rare in cultivation and much asked for. What you will usually be offered under this name is in reality Nymphaea colorata. As a matter of fact, all plants with more lilac blue flowers and especially those with violet stamens are inevitably Nymphaea colorata. You will find thousands of these misidentified specimens on the web, be it as dried flowers and petals (traditionally used for their sedating effects), plants or seeds, which are being offered on several well-known selling platforms. True Nymphaea caerulea always has pure yellow stamens, with only the tip being very light blue. We have been searching for the true species for more than a decade. Now we can offer seeds from the true species, yet only 3 packages are available in 2023. Easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun. VI-XI. |
