300 (350)cm, Bang's Giant Canna is an ornamental and the second tallest Canna species in its genus. It is native of Bolivia and has showy large leaves and terminal racemes with orange funnel shaped flowers. In the past we had offered this species under the name "Canna altensteinii", which is not an accepted name, but supposedly a form within the extremely variable Canna indica complex. However, after examinating herbarium sheets and reading the original description of Canna bangii, our plants do morphoplogically correspond to Canna bangii.
It grows much taller in all aspects than Canna indica and the overall habit is more similar to Türckheim's Giant Canna (Canna tuerckheimii), whereas seeds are almost twice the size of any known Canna indica form. Canna bangii is easily grown in humus rich soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C and reduce watering to a minimum. At lower temperatures plants will go dormant and the rootstock will stay dormant during the cold season. VII-X. |
