Important seed importation regulations for customers from the United Kingdom

The import of any living plant material (including seed) into the UK is regulated by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

Since 1 January 2021 seeds from a couple of “high priority plants” cannot be shipped to the UK anymore as they will require additional paperwork and a phytosanitary certificate. The respective items are marked accordingly in our catalogue:
- Capsicum spp. (chili, hot pepper, etc. - including all wild species)
- Helianthus annuus (common sunflower)
- Linum usitatissimum (common flax)

As of 1 January 2022 some additional species will then be considered “regulated and notifiable” items, and we will not be able to send them anymore to the UK either:
- Prunus spp. (almond, apricot, cherry, peach, plum, etc. - including all wild species)
- Rubus spp. (all raspberries, blackberries, etc. - including all wild species)
- Zea mays (corn - including all wild forms)

--- superseded information---
All other seeds can still be shipped to the UK =>until 30 June 2022<= without a phytosanitary certificate nor any other additional paperwork or pre-notification to UK authorities.

Finally, from 1 July 2022 onwards a phytosanitary certificate will be obligatory for any plant material - including all seeds from ornamental plants.

We are looking forward to offering phytosanitary certificates from 1 July 2022 onwards, however these will incurr a fee of a minimum of some Euro 30,00 per shipment to UK addresses (with the exemption of Northern Ireland). Thus the deadline for not having to pay for a later obligatory phytosanitary certificate will be around 15 June 2022.

Update as of 15 June 2022
After a recent e-mail message sent to all UK customers, we got feedback from several people (many thanks, your feedback was much appreciated!), who told us that the final deadline for full restrictions on seeds imports to the UK has (again) been postponed to sometime in 2023.

Well, first of all my apologies for contacting you over and over again in this matter. This "deadline-yes-or-no-if-ever game" may have become quite boring for you, so it has become to us.

On the other hand, the longer the full implementation of all restrictions will be postponed, the better for all of us.

We have still not found the respective legal basis or any official announcement from the UK government. But in the meantime - and until further notice - we will do business as usual and keep on accepting orders from the UK. And if in a particular order there may arise some problems at UK customs, so that your order will not get through inspection, we will always solve this in your favor.
