Brugmansia versicolor (White Angel Trumpet)

Brugmansia versicolor (White Angel Trumpet)

3 (5)m, White Angel Trumpet is a tall, semi-woody shrub from South America where it is extinct in the wild. It produces showy, very large (up to 40 cm in length, the largest in the genus!), pendulous, pure white flower trumpets, which stay either white (our plants) or mature to peach, pink, or apricot. Flowers are are heavily sweet scented at night. Fruits are very thin and elongated, in comparison to fusiform (spindle shaped) fruits in Brugmansia insignis, Brugmansia suaveolens, and Brugmansia x candida, respectively to ovoid fruits in Brugmansia arborea. Our seeds are from pure white flowering plants with up to 25cm long fruits. In cultivation it prefers a humus rich, freely draining soil and a fresh spot at a winter minimum of some 15°C. Note: seeds from this species had been offered as Brugmansia suaveolens in the past, yet after some more research our plants have finally been correctly identified as Brugmansia versicolor. II-XI.

150 (180)cm, this species was once regarded as a variety of the extremely variable Canna indica, however, based on DNA analysis in 2011, it is now accepted as a taxonomically distinct and valid species of its own. Some seed merchants offer it under the illegitimate name Canna speciosa. It makes broad, yellowish green banana-like leaves and numerous flowers with orange-red upper petals and yellow lower lips with red spots. Seeds in Canna patens are perfectly round, black and with a distinctively glossy shine. Easily grown in any rich, humus rich soil in a sunny spot in summer. 250 (400)cm, Türckheim's Giant Canna (syn. Canna gigantea, Canna latifolia) is native from Mexico to Ecuador and the tallest member in its genus. Some of our own plants have even gained more then 400 cm in height - an impressively large Canna species! It is an evergreen species with very long and broad, banana-like leaves topped by a very tall losely branching stalk with orange-red flowers. For any humus rich soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. This large species requires sufficient space to develop well and is best grown in a large container. During winter keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C and reduce watering to a minimum. At lower temperatures plants will go dormant and the rootstock will stay dormant during the cold season. However, plants shall be kept growing in winter to achieve free flowering. III-IX.

Dahlia imperialis (Bell Tree Dahlia)

Dahlia imperialis (Bell Tree Dahlia)

250 (350)cm, Bell Tree Dahlia is only for its size one of the showiest species in the genus. Dahlia imperialis is a fast growing herbaceous perennial species native of mountaineous regions from southern Mexico to northern Colombia. It makes annual tall shoots from a strong tuberous rootstock, and terminal lose clusters of large intense rose flowers from late autumn to early spring. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. With a good winter protection (e.g. a thick dry mulch layer) the rootstock is reliably winterhardy. However due to its late flowering season it is best grown in a cool wintergarden or greenhouse under frostfree conditions. Seeds are from a motherstock originally collected near Puerto Caté, Chiapas province, Mexico at some 1650m. Flowers in this population are more open and of a richer rose color in comparison to the usually more closed, bell-shaped and pale rose flowers of plants available in the garden trade. VI-VIII.

Dracaena draco (Madeira Dragon Tree)

Dracaena draco (Madeira Dragon Tree)

2 (8)m, Madeira Dragon Tree from the island of Madeira (Portugal) where it is supposedly native, yet only two wild specimens are known from steep cliffs in a valley in the South of the island. It is still not clear if Dracaena daco is native of Madeira or if it had been introduced from the Canaries (ssp. draco) or the Cabo Verde islands (ssp. caboverdeana) a long time ago. Nowadays it is being cultivated in many public and private gardens. Plants differ from Canary populations in broader leaves with a more bluish color. Easily grown in any rich, well drained substrate in full sun throughout the year. During winter keep plants drier at a minimum of some 12°C.

Leucocasia gigantea (Giant Taro)

Leucocasia gigantea (Giant Taro)

400cm, Giant Taro (syn. Colocasia gigantea) is an extremely large species from northern and central Indochina with white, slightly sweet fragrant flowers arranged in a fan and fruits which have a very nice, strong fruity pineapple fragrance at maturity. Plants are extremely fast growing, they may reach maturity from a tiny seed less the size of a sand grain to a very large flowering specimen in just six months! Throughout its distributional range the species is already very large (hence its name), however, in certain populations specimen are consistently even larger than on average. 'Thailand Giant' was originally collected in northern Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand by late Alan Galloway and Petra Schmidt and has been propagated by Tony Avent, Plant Delights Nusery, USA, and produces up to 4 m long and up to 2 m broad leaves with a nice bluish-green tinge, whereas 'Lao Giant' was found in Bolikhamxayi Province, central Laos by Bjørn Malkmus-Hussein, Spain. Leucocasia 'Lao Giant' is a worldwide new introduction from Rareplant.eu and this strain will become even slightly larger than the already huge 'Thailand Giant'. We also have one seed batch available from a plant which suddenly started to grow elsewhere in a planting bed. It is unknown whether this is an offspring from 'Thailand Giant' or 'Lao Giant' and thus we offer this batch without provenance data and at an extremely low price. Easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade (summer) to fulll sun (winter). In winter keep plants slightly drier at a minimum of some 15°C. Leucocasia gigantea will hardly make any offsets, thus the main propagation is via seeds. VII-X.
