Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) & Sprekelia (Aztec Lily)

Hippeastrum and Aztec Lilies are closely related genera from Mexico (Sprekelia) to South America (Hippeastrum). In trade Hippeastrum is usually available under the wrong name Amaryllis, which is a different genus from South Africa with two species only, namely Amaryllis belladonna and Amaryllis paradiscola. Most Hippeastrum and both Sprekelia species are herbaceous, winter or summer dormant bulbous plants, few Hippeastrum species from tropical areas are evergreen. All make lush foliage and spectacular inflorescences with quite large, trumpet shaped flowers. Unless not differently noted below, all are easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil in a partially shaded (summer) to sunny (winter) spot. Keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C throughout the year. During dormancy reduce watering to a minimum. Most species are self-incompatible and require two genetic different clones in order to successfully set seed after hand pollination. We ship 2-years old offset bulbs from plants which have been identified as the true species!
Bulbs will be shipped bareroot with leaves cut off and wrapped in slightly moist kitchen towl - plant them on receipt. The bulb will soon make new leaves after repotting.
Sow seed flat in any humus rich, well drained substrate. Cover seeds only very slightly with soil and keep pots at some 25°C in partial shade.
