Ocimum (Basil) & Perilla (Shiso)

Basil and Shiso are non-hardy annual to perennial herbs or subshrubs and are easily grown in pots under frostfree, rather warm conditions throughout the year. All have a very aromatic, strongly fragrant foliage, which is widely used fresh before plants start to flower in the Mediterranean cookery (Ocimum spp. - Basil), respectively in Asian cookery (Ocimum spp. and Perilla frutescens - Shiso). For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. If grown as semiperennials keep plants in winter in full sun at a minimum of some 15°C with careful watering.
Sow flat on any rich, well drained soil at some 20°C to 30°C. Do not cover seeds as they germinate better with direct light. Transplant to the garden at the end of spring as soon as night temperatures stay above 10°C or keep in larger pots.

Ocimum africanum (Lemon Basil)

Ocimum africanum (Lemon Basil)

30 (40)cm, Lemon Basil is an old stabilized hybrid between Ocimum basilicum and Ocimum americanum which comes true from seed. Thus it is sometimes referred to as a proper species, namely Ocimum africanum. What is mostly offered as Ocimum americanum in the trade is indeed this hybrid, true Ocimum americanum has pubescent leaves and is not in general cultivation. Ocimum × africanum has large, glossy, strongly lemon to lemon-camphor scented leaves and dense racemes with white to more rarely pale lavender flowers. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny and protected spot. Preculture in pots under glass in mid spring at a minimum of some 20°C in full sun.
