Penstemons or Beardtongues are usually growing as perennials with a basal leaf rosette and several upright growing stems in summer with numerous showy, white, red, rose, blue, or bluish lilac trumpet shaped flowers. They are native in open, sunny spots in mountainous regions in North and Central America. Most beardtongue species are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Sow the fine seeds flat from autumn to mid spring on any well drained, rich soil, only finely cover seeds with sand. As for most winter hardy perennials, seeds require a cooling period for several months before they germinate in late spring to early summer, thus during winter place pots outside in a protected spot. Carefully transplant in summer or autumn as soon as seedlings are strong enough. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 40 seeds per package. |
