Antirrhinum (Snapdragon), Alonsoa & Linaria (Toadflax)

Snapdragons (Antirrhinum ssp.) and closely related Toadflaxes (Linaria spp.) are small to large families from mostly cool temperate to cool subtropical areas. Antirrhinum has a disjunct distribution in the western Mediterranean and North America, whereas Linaria is confined to Eurasia and nothern Africa, with an epicenter in the Mediterranean region. Alonsoa is a small genus of some ten species in the western parts of Central and South America, and two species in South Africa. All are mostly annual to biennial, or rarely short lived perennial species within the plantain family (formerly Scrophulariaceae, nowadays sunk into Plantaginaceae) from open sunny spots. Several species have a high ornamental value for their upright hold inflorescences with numerous bright and often bi-colored flowers. All are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny and protected spot.
Sow the dustlike seeds preferably in mid spring on top of any well drained soil. Do not cover seeds with soil, keep pots in a protected spot outside and soil slightly moist from below. Carefully transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8.
