Desert Lily (Hesperocallis undulata) and Mountain Star Lily (Leucocrinum montanum) are both monotypic genera which contain only one species each. The Mountain Star Lily is native of montane regions in western USA, whereas the Desert Lily comes from semi-arid areas in South-Western USA. Both are perennial, herbaceous bulbous plant with a flat, bluish green leaf rosette and showy, short stalked (Leucocrinum) to medium tall (Hesperocallis), pure white star like flowers. Leucocrinum montanum is reasonable winterhardy, plants require a sunny spot in any very well drained soil in a protected spot. Excellent in the rock garden. Hesperocallis undulata is a tender wintergreen and summer dormant species which should be grown in some excellently draining, fully inorganic substrate. In winter plants should be kept at a minimum of some 10°C with careful watering. During dormancy in summer bulbs have to be kept completely dry, otherwise they will not emerge in late autumn anymore and will inevitably rot. A difficult to grow species which is only recommended to the experienced connaisseur. Sow seeds flat in any sandy or gritty, very well drained substrate at some 15°C to a maximum of some 25°C. Seeds are heat sensitive and higher temperatures will inhibit germination, especially in Hesperocallis undulata. Carefully transplant dormant two-year old bulbs from Leucocrinum montanum to the final spot in the garden as soon as leaves have withered in late summer. 10 seeds per package. |
Hesperocallis undulata (Desert Lily)30 (40)cm, Desert Lily Lily is a rarely cultivated, summer dormant and winter green bulbous plant with a bluish-grey basal leaves rosette with undulated margins and medium sized, pure white, fragrant flowers on a medium tall stalk. Hesperocallis undulata is native of semi-arid coastal areas in southwestern USA. It has to be grown in a very well draining and fully inorganic substrate (eg. crushed lava, coarse sand, etc.), as its root system greatly dislikes any humus parts in the soil. Once germinated (after some 2 to 4 weeks) keep the soil only slightly moist, as too much water will inevitably lead to root rot. This species is not winterhardy and has to be kept in pots under frostfree conditions and at a winter mininum of some 10°C with very careful watering. Keep dormant plants absolutely dry. Undoubtedly this is one of the most difficult to cultivate species we offer, and it is not recommended for beginners.
