Vitex (Monk's Pepper)

Vitex or Monk's Pepper are usually perennial woody shrubs native from the Mediterranean extending to E Asia. They have acer-like, sometimes aromatic foliage and most ornamental terminal spikes of bright rose flowers. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny position.
Sow flat in any rich, well drained soil, keep soil only slightly moist and place pots outside in a protected spot. Germination occurs in late spring. Transplant in late summer or late spring as soon as plants are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.

Acer-like, silvery-grey, light green, aromatic foliage with broader leaflets than in Vitex agnus-castus, terminal spikes of small rose flowers. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny, protected spot. Has small, black, flat seeds. Seeds from an original collection made at the border of Nahr-el-Kalb (River of the Dog) in S Lebanon, 180m. VI-VIII.
