Scilla (Macaronesian Blue Bell)

Macaronesian Blue Bells are beautiful, easily grown bulbous plants, native of the Canary Islands and Madeira. They prefer a sunny position in any well drained soil with sufficient watering when plants are in green. In winter keep plants in full sun at a minimum of some 10°C. Keep bulbs completely dry with yellowing of leaves, which is usually by the end of spring to mid summer.
Sow Canary Scilla species at 10°C to 20°C under protected glass from early autumn to late spring, seeds will only germinate in autumn and winter, regardless date of sowing. Keep always frostfree at a minimum of some 10°C in a sunny spot with regular watering.

It makes a broad flat leaf rosette and rose colored racemes with contrasting sky blue miniature flowers followed by ornamental bright orange and fleshy seed capsules. A wintergreen and winter and spring flowering species. Best grown in a cold and frosfree greenhouse. Not winterhardy, keep at a minimum of some 10°C in a sunny spot during winter. XI-II.

35 (50)cm, very large Scilla native of the Canary Islands. Makes various, up to 10 cm broad, deep green leaves with a nice reddish edge emerge from a massive bulb, which gains up to 8 cm ø. The pink colored racemes reach up to 40 cm in height and show small pink to lilac flowers in a lax inflorescence followed by fleshy fruits turning from bright green to decorative yellowish-orange. A not winter hardy, sommer dormant and wintergreen species which requires a minimum of some 10°C in winter in a sunny spot and careful watering. XI-III.

Scilla madeirensis (Madeira Blue Bell)

40 (60)cm, Madeira Blue Bell is a rare and threatened, very tall and large Scilla native of Madeira (Portugal). It produces severals, up to 10 cm broad leaves with a nice reddish edge, from a very large bulb, which may gain 10 cm and more in diameter. The racemes reach up to 60 cm in height and have numerous small pale lilac flowers followed by fleshy dark green fruits maturing to yellow. A not winter hardy species which requires a minimum of some 5°C in winter in a sunny spot and careful watering. Summer dormant. Seeds are always extremely scarce. XI-III.
