Madeira Ruscus or Madeira Butcher's Broom is an ornamental, rare evergreen with up to 40cm tall stalks with broad, blackish-green leaves and most decorative, bright red, large berries beneath after flowering. Native of few sites in the laurel forest of Madeira. Excellent pot plant for any humus rich, well drained soil in a partially shaded spot. Keep sunnier and drier at a minimum of some 5°C in winter. Sow large seeds in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. After germination place pots in partial shade. Germination may take up to 6 months.
