Ilex (Canary and European Holly, Yerba Mate)

Ilex, Hollies and Yerba Mate are evergreen shrubs to small trees from Eurasia and the Americas. They usually have glossy, dark green foliage and mostly ornamental bright red to purplish-red berries on older plants. Fruiting branches are widely used in Christmas decoration. Dried and fresh leaves from Ilex paraguariensis are used to make Mate infusion. All Ilex species are easily grown foliage plants for any rich, well drained substrate with sufficient moisture in summer and in a partially shaded spot.
The two Canary Hollies grow in between or just below the zone of the laurel forest and are typical plants in this unique ecosystem. Keep Canary and South American species in containers with reduced watering in winter in full sun at a minimum of some 5°C.
The European Holly is fully winter hardy in the open garden in Central Europe and may be planted to a partially shaded to sunny spot.
Sow seeds of Canary and South American Hollies flat in any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade at some 15°C to 28°C. Higher temperatures will slow down or even inhibit germination. Plants grow rather slowly and thus will stay manageable for many years.
Sow seeds of the European Hollies flat in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a protected spot outside during winter and transplant seedlings in late summer.
All are USDA Climate Zone 10 respectively 6.
