Rhamnus (Canary and Mediterranean Buckthorn)

The genus Rhamnus or Buckthorn is represented by only three endemic species on the Canary Islands, growing under frostfree conditions in the upper termophilic and the lower laurel forest zone. Similar to the Mediterranean species these are woody shrubs to small trees with evergreen, leathery, dark green, glossy foliage and axillary clusters of small flowers followed by ornamental brownish-red to black fruits. They are easily grown as pot plants or bonsais. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Keep plants drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C.
Sow seeds flat on any rich, well drained soil at some 20°C throughout the year. Keep pots in a sunny spot.

150 (250)cm, Canary Buckthorn is a tall, ornamental, woody evergreen shrub from the Canary islands with narrow leathery leaves and axillary small flowers followed by black fruits. For any rich, well drained substrate. Keep plants under frostfree conditions at a minimum of some 5°C and in a sunny spot in winter.
