Mandragora (Mandrake)

Mandrakes are native from southern Europe to the Himalaya. They have a perennial roostocj and make either sessile stemless leaf rosettes or annual shoots with long ovate leaves and purplish or greenish-yellow flowers, which are followed by an oblong fruit. Plants are usually summer dormant and start new leaf growth in autumn.
Sow flat in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Seeds will require a prolonged cooling period for several months after sowing. If seeds are sowed too late, germination will not take place before spring the following year at rising temperatures. Keep pots outside in a protected spot and the soil always slightly moist. Transplant young plants to the open ground after two years.
Note: All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested !

Mandragora officinarum var. autumnalis (Autumn-flowering Mandrake)

10 (20)cm, Autumn-flowering Mandrake is a perennial, summer dormant herb with a thick, branched rootstock and a basal rosette of large, elongated, wrinkled, dark green leaves. The whitish green to dull blue upwards facing flowers are bell shaped and born in the center of the rosette. The round, ripe fruits are yellow. For any rich, well drained, deep soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. This autumn flowering variety is hardier than the spring flowering one. Seeds in all Mandragora species will require a prolonged cooling period for several months after sowing. If seeds are sowed too late, germination will not take place before spring the following year at rising temperatures. Keep pots outside in a protected spot and the soil always slightly moist. IX-X.
