Paeonia (Herbaceous Peonies)

Herbaceous Peonies are longlived herbaceous perennials which are easily grown from seed. However they will need some time to establish and to gain flowering size, which usually is between three to four years, depending on cultivation conditions. Once reached maturity they will display their spectacular flowers for many year. All are excellent plants for any partially shaded or sunny spot in a well drained, yet humus rich soil.
The present nomenclatura within this genus is more than complicated, several species have been recently renamed or sunk into a different species. We do not follow this renaming and will keep the old names until more scientific reliable information are available.
Sow in any rich, well drained soil in autumn or early spring some 1cm/0.4" deep. Several seeds may not germinate before spring of the second year after sowing, thus do not empty pots with ungerminated seeds too early ! All Paeonia seeds require a prolonged cooling period for several months in winter before germination starts in early to mid spring. During winter place pots outside in a protected, sunny spot. The seedlings are best grown in pots for at least some 2 years, thereafter carefully transplant he young plants in early spring, paying special attention to not breaking their fleshy rhizomes. Once established, do not disturb plants until they are becoming too large. Carefully divide rhizomes of herbaceous species in late summer after the foliage has withered.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

Apart from herbaceous peonies we offer several tree peonies as well.

Paeonia mlokosewitschii (Yellow Peony)

100cm, Yellow Peony (now botanically correct: Paeonia daurica ssp. mlokosewitschii) is a quite rarely seen peony native in the Lagodeki Valley in south-eastern Caucasus. It has large pale lemon yellow flowers and slightly glaucous leaves, shaded with red in full sun. This beautiful species has unfortunately become almost extinct in nature. Easy for a partially shaded place with peaty compost as basis. The bright pink seed capsules with deep lilac seeds give have some additional ornamental value in July/August. Offered seeds are from unhybridized, true to type specimens with pure yellow flowers! Please note: Offered rhizomes are from our mother plants and they have multiple flower respectively leaf buds as described below. You will not find similar large plants anywhere else! Several longer storage roots will have to be cut by half for transport, however plants have sufficient reserves to grow well next spring. As is the case in all peonies, plants may not open flower buds in the first year after transplanting. However they will show a magnificent display from the second year onwards after they established.
