Paeonia (Herbaceous Peonies)

Herbaceous Peonies are longlived herbaceous perennials which are easily grown from seed. However they will need some time to establish and to gain flowering size, which usually is between three to four years, depending on cultivation conditions. Once reached maturity they will display their spectacular flowers for many year. All are excellent plants for any partially shaded or sunny spot in a well drained, yet humus rich soil.
The present nomenclatura within this genus is more than complicated, several species have been recently renamed or sunk into a different species. We do not follow this renaming and will keep the old names until more scientific reliable information are available.
Sow in any rich, well drained soil in autumn or early spring some 1cm/0.4" deep. Several seeds may not germinate before spring of the second year after sowing, thus do not empty pots with ungerminated seeds too early ! All Paeonia seeds require a prolonged cooling period for several months in winter before germination starts in early to mid spring. During winter place pots outside in a protected, sunny spot. The seedlings are best grown in pots for at least some 2 years, thereafter carefully transplant he young plants in early spring, paying special attention to not breaking their fleshy rhizomes. Once established, do not disturb plants until they are becoming too large. Carefully divide rhizomes of herbaceous species in late summer after the foliage has withered.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
