Plantago (Plantain)

Plantains make up a diverse genus with numerous, mostly perennial species from cool to subtropical regions in the northern and southern hemisphere. They have either a basal leaf rosette or make short woody stems. All are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Some species are used for their medicinal properties. Subtropical species from the Macaronesian (Madeira and Canary islands) and Mediterranean region (USDA climate zone 8 and above) are best grown in pots under frostfree conditions throughout the year. In winter keep subtropical plants drier at a minimum of some 5°C.
Sow seeds of winter hardy species flat on any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a protected spot outside. Sow seeds of subtropical species flat on any rich, well drained soil at some 15°C to 25° throughout the year.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7, unless stated differently.
