Hesperocallis (Desert Lily) & Leucocrinum (Mountain Star Lily)

Desert Lily (Hesperocallis undulata) and Mountain Star Lily (Leucocrinum montanum) are both monotypic genera which contain only one species each. The Mountain Star Lily is native of montane regions in western USA, whereas the Desert Lily comes from semi-arid areas in South-Western USA. Both are perennial, herbaceous bulbous plant with a flat, bluish green leaf rosette and showy, short stalked (Leucocrinum) to medium tall (Hesperocallis), pure white star like flowers. Leucocrinum montanum is reasonable winterhardy, plants require a sunny spot in any very well drained soil in a protected spot. Excellent in the rock garden. Hesperocallis undulata is a tender wintergreen and summer dormant species which should be grown in some excellently draining substrate with few organic parts. In winter plants should be kept at a minimum of some 10°C with careful watering. During dormancy in summer bulbs have to be kept completely dry, otherwise they will not emerge in late autumn anymore and will inevitably rot. A difficult to grow species which is only recommended to the experienced connaisseur.
Sow seeds flat in any sandy or gritty, very well drained substrate at some 15°C to a maximum of some 25°C. Seeds are heat sensitive and higher temperatures will inhibit germination, especially in Hesperocallis undulata. Carefully transplant dormant two-year old bulbs from Leucocrinum montanum to the final spot in the garden as soon as leaves have withered in late summer.
