Hydrastis (Goldenseal)

Goldenseal or Ground Raspberry is a herbaceous, summer dormant perennial which has become rare in its habitat in shaded, slightly moist spots in woods in eastern USA and southeastern Canada due to over collecting the yellow rhizomatous roots for medical purposes. These are ornamental plants which make one to two, 5 to 9 lobed, dark green leaves on hairy stem and a central, white flower which is followed by a bright red, raspberry like fruit (not edible) in early summer. A nice choice species, however not easy in cultivation unless not settled.
Sow the black seeds flat immediately on receipt in any humus rich, well drained soil containing some sand to enhance drainage. Keep pots in partial shade and soil always slightly moist, yet not completely wet throughout the year. Seeds require a stratification period in winter until they eventually germinate in late spring the following year. Carefully transplant young rhizomes after the leaves have withered in late summer to early autumn in an always slightly moist, humus rich soil in partial shade. Leave plants undisturbed, seedlings greatly dislike any disturbance and might be set back in growth for one growing cycle.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
