Smilax (Hardy Carrion Flower)

Hardy Carrion Flowers are evergreen, semi-evergreen or herbaceous climbers from slightly moist, humus rich soils in woods throughout North America and colder regions of northern Asia. All are ornamental foliage plants with heart-shaped to oval, usually glossy, leathery leaves and pendulous racemes of small whitish-green flowers followed by most ornamental, densely packed bright orange-red, black or brilliant blue berries in late summer and autumn. They are easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot and require a climbing aid.
Sow in any rich, slightly sandy soil in a sunny and protected spot. Transplant young rhizomatous rootstock to the garden in autumn. In the first couple of years a thick mulch layer as an additional protection against freezing through in winter is recommended.
Note: All parts are poisonous if ingested.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
