Polygonatum (Salomon's Seal)

Salomon's Seal have a perennial, rhizomatous root system from which arise annual flower stalk in spring. Most are excellent ground covering plants for cool, moist, and (partially) shaded spots in any leafy soil. Most species have white (few species rose and violet) pendulous flowers which are followed by decorative bluish-green to black berries in late summer.
Sow seed preferably in autumn in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a sheltered and shaded spot outside for winter. The first leaves sometimes do not show before spring of the second year. Transplant fleshy rhizomes in autumn or as soon as plants go dormant.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
