Physalis (Hardy species)

Lantern Flowers, with perennial rhizomatous root system and annual flowering stalks. Good ground-covering plants, which may need to be reduced from time to time. Yellow flowers are later followed by a 'lantern' (=inflated calyx), containing one bright colored, round berry (not edible).
Sow flat in spring to early summer in any soil in a sunny spot.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii f. bunyardii

30 (40)cm, a showy perennial with inconspicuous flowers followed by a most ornamental, inflated, bright orange calyx which is slightly more elongated than in the typical form of franchetii. The lampions are excellent cut flowers and are used in dry flower arrangements. The berry inside is not edible. Easily grown in any humus rich, always slightly moist soil in a sunny spot. VI-VIII.
