Semele (Climbing Butcher's Broom)

Climbing Butcher's Brooms are evergreen climbers from the medium-moist laurel forest in the Macaronesian region. They have large, glossy deep-green 'leaves' (= flat branches, lat. Cladodias). The rather small, white flowers are followed by most decorative and long lasting orange-red berries. All Semele species require a climbing aid and will develop bets if planted freely. For any humus-rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Sow in any rich soil at a minimum of some 20°C in a partially shaded place. Keep drier, cooler and sunny in winter. All are USDA Climate Zone 10. 3 seeds per package. |

Semele androgyna ssp. pterygophora3 (7)m, a quite rare subspecies native of the laurel forest on the island of Madeira (Portugal), where it climbs up trees and hangs down on rock walls. Flowers and fruits are born at the edges of the 'leaves'. Very easy and showy container plant. This suspecies differs in the ones from the Canary island by having slightly narrower 'leaves'. X-III. |
